3:1

For every 3 swordfish caught in large-scale driftnet fishing, one marine mammal is entangled and either injured or killed.

Species shown: Swordfish, Brown Pelican, Sperm Whale, California Sea Lion, Short-Beaked Common Dolphin, Loggerhead Sea Turtle

Constructed from 40 rectangles of cotton woven together with twine, 3:1 explores the ratio of harmful bycatch caused by large-scale driftnet fishing. Often called “curtains of death,” I wanted to reimagine the gillnet as a hybrid of something both indoors and outdoors. Key species were identified, carved in linoleum, and hand-printed on distressed fabric. The repetition of the pattern is meant to build upon the repetition of the catch and perpetuation of bycatch—something that could go on forever and become more tangled.
